The short answer: “regional” under migration rules is far broader than the “remote countryside” image — Adelaide, Perth and Canberra all count. The benefits are +5 points, a possible second 485, and a state nomination advantage. But the move only pays off when your occupation has real jobs where you are going. ”Regional” under migration rules — broader than you think

With the standard 485 down to 2 years and available only once per stream, this is a “time budget extension” that big-city students simply do not get.

Benefit 3 — the state nomination advantage, the most underrated of the three

This may be the biggest benefit and the least discussed. The smaller states — SA, TAS, NT — typically run nomination streams that clearly favour graduates of their own institutions: lower requirements, broader occupation lists for “local graduates”. The classic mistake: moving for 5 points into a no-demand course

The mistake we see most: choosing regional purely for the points, then studying a field that neither the state nor the skilled occupation lists need. The result: 5 points but no ANZSCO-relevant job, no point-scoring experience, and no state nomination either — because states nominate to labour demand, not to your postcode. Regional points only have value standing next to a real occupation in your overall points table and the state’s occupation list.

Already studying in Sydney/Melbourne — how does a mid-course move count?

A common question: “I’m in first year in Melbourne — if I transfer to Adelaide, where do my 2 regional years start counting?” The general principle: regional points attach to study and residence in a regional area during the course — the big-city portion does not count towards the regional quota. The precise counting rules for each course structure (campus transfers, online study, exchange semesters) have their own technicalities — this is exactly the kind of question to put to an agent before signing a transfer, because discovering you are a few months short after moving is very hard to fix.
